I asked John to reflect a bit on his experience as a SIPA student and contribute to the blog over the summer.   This is his sixth entry. ___________________________ I just finished speaking at one of our twice-weekly information sessions, where I was asked what sets SIPA apart from comparable schools.   I thought I’d recreate my response here, as I believe that it is true. First, you have to think about what schools you are setting SIPA apart from.   The MIA and MPA, though largely similar in coursework at SIPA, have different rivals.   On the MIA side SIPA compares with schools like Georgetown, SAIS, Fletcher and GWU.   On the MPA side, however, SIPA compares with schools like Harvard, Woodrow Wilson and Syracuse.   SIPA is a top program in either degree, but the nice thing about it is that both groups of students are fully integrated.   This is one thing that sets SIPA apart. Though some MPA programs have international components (i.e. Harvard) and other MIA programs have policy components (i.e. SAIS), none of the other top schools can boast that both student groups are integrated under the same roof.   The advantage of this comes in the diversity of student interests and career paths.   Public policy and international affairs are inherently intertwined, so it makes sense that future leaders in both fields would begin interacting in graduate school. The single biggest strength of SIPA, in my opinion, lies in its massive alumni network.   This cannot be overstated.   SIPA has 16,000 alumni working in hundreds of different careers in hundreds of countries.   I don’t know of any other single factor that would be more important for a professional school.   SIPA students come here for the purpose of professional advancement, and having such a large alumni network to tap into to help with this advancement is very valuable. Despite what you may hear or think, the majority of SIPA students find jobs through networking.   I’ve mentioned previously that some get hired through formal recruitment programs, which is true, but many more get jobs by contacting people who are able to put them in the right place at the right time.   I knew this to be the case coming in and therefore a large alumni network was important to me. I found that every alumnus/a I have ever contacted from SIPA has been responsive, supportive and generally helpful.   Not all got me an interview, but they at least gave me things to think about that helped my search moving forward.   Also, I figured that not going to school in DC was not disadvantageous for my field of interest since SIPA had just as many or more alumni working in DC as the DC schools did.   I found this to be absolutely true.   That said, we also have more alumni in New York, London, Shanghai etc. than any other rival school.   This is something I highly recommend considering in your search. Another big strength of SIPA I found was the incredible faculty.   It was wonderful to have so many classes to choose from.   However, what made these classes even more interesting was the people who taught them.   Most of your professors will be adjuncts.   Not all, by any means.   SIPA has many dedicated, knowledgeable, full-time professors.   However, there are many more who work full-time doing something else and who teach on the side.   At first blush this may sound like a disadvantage.   However, I should reiterate that it is a professional school.   These adjuncts don’t just have some other job; they have very interesting other jobs. I had a finance professor who runs a hedge fund during the day and another who is the heading of global emerging markets at a large bank.   I had a security professor who worked for a certain intelligence agency in DC for many years.   I had an energy professor who was the head of scenario analysis planning at a large oil company before coming to SIPA.   There are many more like this.   These people are able to not only give you insight into how things really work in their fields; they are also able to shape the readings and coursework to give you the tools to enter that field.   They also tend to be a great networking resource. The last advantage, as I mentioned on my earlier post about the World Cup, is the student body.   For me, studying international affairs with students from over 100 countries was a huge draw.   No other school can come close to SIPA’s diversity.   Being able to hear from classmates that have direct experience in the places we are studying adds a valuable element. The student body is also really, really interesting.   Everybody I knew at SIPA had done something cool before graduate school, and all had (and still have) impressive goals.   After only two years I consider some of my SIPA classmates to be some of my best friends, and I am sure we’ll stay in touch for many years.

After all, it is the land of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, of Microsoft and Amazon. But even with two of the worlds biggest tech giants nearby, accounting and consulting still draw many grads from the  Foster School of Business at UW. Over the past three years, Ernst Young has hired 78 business majors from Foster — more than any other company during that time frame. Next highest is Deloitte, which has hired 68 UW business majors since 2016. Amazon, meanwhile, has hired the third-most number of graduates at 63.Over the past three years, employment outcomes have also improved at the Foster School. In 2016, about three-quarters of graduates seeking employment had secured full-tim e positions within three months of graduation. This past year, that number climbed to 90%. Average salaries have also ticked up over the past three years. In 2016, those with full-time jobs three months after graduation boasted an average starting salary of $56,939. We still have a strong number of accounting students, but they tend to do accounting IS. The uptick in IS has benefitted not only our accounting students, but really all of our students.You know, some of the things we’ve really been trying to influence in the career center is how can we bring more skill sets to the students that maybe is not going to be listed in the classrooms. Bowling for Columbine is a documentary directed and written by Michael Moore about the United States of America’s mindset on gun violence and finding out the key causes of why America has the highest amount of gun related deaths in the world. Medical marijuana also has the capability of helping children with any form of epilepsy. Parents with epileptic children are discovering that the non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, commonly referred to as CBD, is decreasing the amount of seizures their child has. With the deduction in seizures, said children are developing normally. When a child is diagnosed with a syndrome that can cause seizures, it is not uncommon for the child to stop developing and even deteriorate to a prior state of development. Charlotte Figi, who was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome at six months of age, was experiencing 300 grand mal seizures a week, but after ingesting a form of marijuana low in Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, she is experiencing only 7 a week. Charlotte’s mother, Paige, saw her daughter deteriorating away due to the Dravet diagnosis. Faced with certain death, Paige decided to research a form of marijuana low in THC but high in CBD. Paige fi rst had to persuade two doctors to prescribe Charlotte a medical marijuana card. Most of the doctors she called said no. But Dr. Margeret Gredde thought that there was no other option for Charlotte and was the first to prescribe a medical marijuana

Most of the natives were dying from diseases, and Europeans were unfit to the climate and suffered from tropical diseases. Africans were excellent workers. They had experience of agriculture and keeping cattle. They were used to a tropical climate and hot climates. They were also failure with tropical diseases, and they could work very hard on plantations and in mines. In the early 17th century, European settlers in North America turned to African slaves as an inexpensive, harder labored source, much better than indentured servants (who were mostly poor Europeans). In 1619, a Dutch ship brought 20 African Americans to the British colonies of Jamestown, Virginia, Charleston, and mostly any other big cities on the cost. Slavery spread throughout the American colonies pretty fast. It is impossible to give an exact number, but some historians have estimated that 6 to 7 million slaves were imported to the Americas during the 18th century alone. Devine, known for her conservative view on political and social issues, is deliberately bias against the Greens as she has gained vas wealth through exploiting the countries natural resources such as deforestation. By demonstrating the concept of conflicting perspectives both composers are able to shape meaning to convey their purpose through the choice of textual forms, structures and language. The concept of conflicting perspectives presents the audience choice and involves them in the depiction of the message of the text and the composer’s agenda. In Shakespeare’s renowned play Julius Caesar the concept of political power in ancient Rome, and how political tactics are often used to manipulate the public is explored. The concept of conflicting perspectives is created in the play by the characterisation of Brutus and Marc Antony. The tendency of humans to see patterns and structures everywhere (even where there are none) is well documented and probably has its survival value added. Another trend is to discount these metaphors as erroneous, irrelevant, or deceptively misleading. Yet, these metaphors are generated by the same Mind that is to be described by them. The entities or processes to which the brain is compared are also brain-children, the results of brain-storming, conceived by minds. What is a computer, a software application, a communications network if not a (material) representation of cerebral events? In other words, a necessary and sufficient connection must exist between ANYTHING created by humans and the minds of humans. Even a gas pump must have a mind-correlate. It is also conceivable that representations of the non-human parts of the Universe exist in our minds, whether a-priori (not deriving from experience) or a-posteriori (dependent upon experience). This correlation, emulation, simulation, representation (in short : close connection) between the excretions, output, spin-offs, products of the human mind and the human mind itself is a key to understanding it. This claim is an instance of a much broader category of claims: that we can learn about the artist by his art, about a creator by his creation, and generally: about the origin by any of its derivatives, inheritors, successors, products and similes. This general contention is especially strong when the origin and the product share the same nature. Not all molestation is the violent and forceful type that most everybody imagines. Most of the sexual abuse that occurs is called the seductor type. This type of molester gets in good with the families of the kids and also pays special attention to the kids. They take advantage of weaknesses in the family. If the father of the child is often away on business, the offender sees this as an opportunity to fill in the fathers shoes. He is destined to give the child the father figure that he or she needs. The phrase used often in the article in SI was that the kids are trading sex for attention. The kids are getting attention from the coach in exchange for sexual acts. These kids dont realize what is happening to them because they dont understand the seduction process.Although this problem is such a terrible one, there are not many ways to prevent this. Among the ways of prevention are background checks, a better understanding of the problem, not as close relationships with the coaches, and education and communication with the children. I know from experience that in Massachusetts it is mandatory for all people working or volunteering with children a background check must be done and papers must be filled out that say you have not been incarcerated for any offense in the past.All volunteers and coaches should be checked with the Megans law CD-ROM sex registry and also checked for further offenses. Another part of the solution to this problem is that parents need to be further educated on the subject. If parents are as ignorant about the subject as I was they need to be more educated. In the class I would teach the parents how to confront their children and educate them on the problem.
